I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and I hope you all have a Happy New year.

Mark Beggs

Looking back on 2021, I am proud of what NCIMI and especially our NHS partners have achieved through the extreme adversity that COVID-19 has brought. Thank you for everything you have done during this difficult year.

This year we’ve continued to work on 13 exemplar projects aimed at delivering against unmet needs. Including COVERSCAN and HOST which aim to improve diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. We were particularly pleased that Professor Fergus Gleeson was awarded a £1.8m grant from NIHR to further evaluate his xenon-MRI platform as a tool for long COVID diagnosis which he started with NCIMI funding.

We’re proud to be collaborating with 14 NHS trusts, 13 industry partners, and 6 charity partners, as well as continuing to work with Innovate UK as our funding partner. Innovate UK helped NCIMI and its partners considerably with their approval of a funded nine-month extension of the NCIMI programme into 2023.

I’m looking forward to seeing what we achieve together in 2022 as we continue to forge new partnerships, conduct more research and help improve patient experience and diagnosis through AI adoption.

In 2022 we look forward to seeing the results emerging from our completing Exemplar projects.  Of note is an exciting reader study evaluation of an AI tool which we will complete early in the New Year with input from an 18 strong radiology team from across six of the NCIMI NHS partner sites including Oxford, Buckinghamshire, Royal Berkshire, Cornwall, Frimley and Glasgow ably supported by GE Healthcare Ltd and RAIQC ltd. Look out more on this project’s progress in the New Year.

Warmest wishes

Mark Beggs
